BigSarge, I know your new so I'll temper my reply some. I've been working on this for over a year now. I'm sorry but if you don't look the part folks aren't going to really given you a good comment at a convention. I've been working on Mandalorian armor for well over a year now, I'm waiting till I get myself in shape enough to actually finish it. Till then I'm gathering what I need.
I guess I'm the only person who actually gives a flying flip how I look when out in costume.
This is all I'm going to say, since I don't want to start a war over this. I'm beyond tired of ignorant people.

Profiler, stop putting your insecurities on others. We here are all well aware of your position regarding doubles and people who don't "look the part", and as far as I can tell nobody cares. Let it go man, your elitist attitude is getting old.

All I can say is have fun with it. Between the figs, comics and cartoons there are more than a few looks. It's easier to identify someone with an awesome detail oriented costume thatn someone in a shitty get up who happens to look like somebody. And as for size, I had the same prob going into Law and Dante from Devil May Cry. So I ate less and worked out losing 25 pounds last Summer. It took a few months, that's it. Nike says it best when it comes to diets or costumes...just do it.

In rebuttle.....a good costumer knows how to hide flawand direct the eye away....And when I did my Boba Fett costume, no body cared that it was home sewn or not screen accurate....they were awed by the built in laser and firing rocket gauntlets...my jet pack was made from beverage containers and my gun was customized plastic but that didn't stop 100 some people wanting their picture with me and grabbing my gear to check it out.....It was good enough to win me the $500 to buy my stormtrooper armor.....In my armor I look like the 1995 Buff toy Stormtroopers....and nobody yet has accused me of being too short for a stormtrooper....Besides, my armor was based off of MidWest Garrison's Officer "Darktrooper" Dan....who was a LARGE cop.....After donning his armor a few times he has lost about 40lbs or so....I din't recognize him the next year...
So we all have 2 choices .....we can sit on our WIDE LOADS and belittle everybody and be NON PRODUCTIVE, or we can be creative, productive, and helpful . Now I ain't looking to make no enemies, and I have nothing against you personally.....BUT I cannot stand it when other people work so hard on something only for other people to tear them down....people who have no costumes to show or props built.....
This ain't high school anymore people, this is the real world, where you better find something that makes you happy and hang on to it, don't let anybody take that from you.....In the real world, bully's get their asses kicked..............So sayeth the SARGE.

Sarge what are you talking about? You obviously don't know what a profiler is or have a clue or the reason I'm using it.
As to being elitist, I'm not telling people what they should or shouldn't do. I'm just giving input, I thought everyone was welcome to do that. If I'm going to invest money into a costume I want to invest it into something I want to do and will be happy with. I'm sorry I'm not rich and can afford to do a costume just to do it. I have to pick and chose what I do, and I've a perfectionist view of costuming. It mainly is in reguards to me, others can do what they want to do. I just think things should look good, and make us stand out from the average folks at a con who just throw things together. Hell, I'm sorry I'm having a hard time finding a Joe I want to costume as. I like very few of the Joe characters, I've always liked the Noks and Cobra. Also, I'm trying to avoid a copy of someone else since it will probably be my only joe costume and I'd not have something else to wear. Sorry if I give a damn.

Interesting... I'll bite my tongue considering I've changed my views on costuming... wouldn't want to offend the 501st or some other organization as a whole...
I personally am just tired with elistism in costuming from all sides.
Do I think folks need to look the part? Absolutely.
Do I think I look the part of Duke? Not really. That's why I rarely wear the gear anymore. I'm still working on the costume, but I loathe the way I currently look in it. Maybe after April or May, I'll be fit enough to look and work the part. Heck, the pics of Dreamcon 2004 made me feel a tad insecure.
I also dislike dressing as specific characters. Sure, I've been Duke, John Constantine, and others... but there really is no one I can exactly look like, unless Kevin Bacon were lucky enough to be in a big budget movie that inspired costumes and action figures and whatnot. Even then... eh, he's got a good 20, 30 years on me.
What was I ranting about? Ah well, I'll remember it sooner or later.
Oh yeah... We are Outcasts. There is no need for any one of us to make ourselves further outcasts.
Unity. Unity and fellowship. The bonds that we hold as geeks, nerds, losers, and dorks. The bonds as costumers. The bonds as con goers.

Well said Duke.
Profiler nobody is knocking the fact you can't find a character you like or want to do. What bothers me is that EVERY post you make is along the lines of "This guy looks better, don't do that we have one" ect...I have not seen a pic on this site that looks like it was just "thrown together". They all look great and have love of the character in them. Of course you are intitled to your opinion, everyone is, but we all know your opinion is going to be some form of negative criticism. Just step down from your high horse and join us common folk.
As the old adage goes "Shit or get off the pot"

I agree with Duke, I just have standards I follow. I also don't like the being specific characters. But, for this you do what you have to do.
I'm sorry if I can't just pick a character at random. Trust me I've been working on this for over a year now. Not a few weeks like some seem to think. I thought everyone was welcome to have an opinion here, if that has changed let me know.
I've always been an outcast, a nobody. I thought I'd found a place where I might fit in. You don't know how it was for me at DreamCon and other Cons where we've been in costume and I've not been there in costume. That is part of why I didn't go to the JoeCon this year. I didn't want to be the odd ball. I've never fit in, anywhere. Is how it was and probably how it always will be. So if my opinions and views aren't welcome then fine, I'll just keep quiet.
