Yeah, Mutt, I was off the boards for something like a month I guess. Got distracted with other dramas in my life. But I'm back now. Okay, with Wil "The Mossman" Moss, here's the deal: He's only gonna be in on the Con for Friday and Saturday night. That screws with the math of the cost, but it does give us a bit more room for unpacking and packing up to get out. Another thing is that he's got NO costumes or gear to speak of whatsoever. Not a costumer, not a Joe, no 501st. Nada. So his baggage and space should be minimal. My vote is for the Hyatt, not because I have the reservation there (that's a negative in my mind), but because it'll be closer to most of the action. Regardless of whether we can get an adjoining room with The Pit, I'm throwing a vote at the Hyatt. And I can tell you now that Wil certainly doesn't care which hotel he's in, so forget him in this show of hands. I'll call the Hyatt to double check the price quote I got, but I DID tell them I was with DragoCon (and that I was booking for four nights) when I called in the reservation. We'll see what's going on soon...

I'm not in your rooms, but here is just my take on everything. 7 people in 1 room is too many. If you guys want to do it, I wouldn't. You have 2 rooms between you, split it up. You don't have to listen to me, but 6 people in one room is cluttered as all hell, 7 would be....

As it is right now, frankly and honestly, and I can only speak for me here, I personally can't afford to have only 3 people in a room for four days. And like I said, Wilson's only at the Con for two days, with no stuff.
I know it's gonna be ugly, Bill. And no amount of glossing over of the facts that I do is gonna change that. But my buddy needs a place to crash. What else am I supposed to do for him?
You say it's a bad idea for everyone involved, but so is splitting the cost of a hotel room between only 3 people. I'd say it's simply not an option for most people. For me it's not an option. And I know BBQ can't afford it, either.
At this point, if I have to roll up my sleeping bag and crash on the streets of Atlanta or hide out in a bar all night on Friday and Saturday night, I will, because that's the kind of guy I am. I'm serious, and I've done far stupider things in my time. I'm not saying it'll be a cakewalk. It'll be a living hell for me, but I'm not gonna leave my friend out in the cold.
I'm open to other ideas, but the clusterfark of hotel housing kind of caught a lot of people by surprise. Double-bookings... cancelations... people not going to DCon who usually do... new people coming to their first... strangers who've never met all trying to figure out what to do and how to help each other... all this contributed to a pretty hectic situation.
I can't split down to a 3 person room. I'm open to other options though, if having 7 people in a room is completely out of the question and impossible to handle. I mean, I have my "stay up all night and then sleep during the day" plan, but I'd rather be doing the stuff at the Con that I came to do than sleeping the day away.
Anyone have any other constructive thoughts or ideas? --FF

Well I'd take no glee in turning anyone away, to be sure.
But Wild Bill is right. We're into increasing diminishing returns with every added person--the savings vs convenience threshold has been crossed.
Now, in the Marriott last year, we had 7 or 8 people in the room one night due to an unrelated drama; we all survived just fine--but the extra people just crashed on the floor next to the bathroom, had no luggage, and were gone before most of us woke up.
My inclination is: if we do this, we don't complicate the math any more. Four nights divided seven ways; stay one night, stay four. If you're in you're in. Saving a few bucks for two of the nights isn't really going to make up for the inconvenience to everyone otherwise, and wouldn't be fair to Doom and Milf, who are paying for Thursday night even though they might not get there until Friday.
Thoughts, everyone?

I just shot an email to Wil with that news. It's probably the only way to do it. Not because of the math stuff, but because of the inCONvenience factor. I'll let y'all know if he's still in or what. -Ratman

OK, tapping into my Disney-implanted microchip here: What if you: Get two rooms for Friday and Saturday night, and consolidate down to one room for the other nights? I'm not saying EVERYONE has to move, but put the reservation into say Wil's hands, or someone who will be staying in that room, and only have a few people change rooms. Or, if only Wil, Milf, mini, and Doom will be in starting Friday, have them check in, and then Milfie, mini and Doomie can move into the other room when Wil leaves. And I've never had a problem with the Hyatt--I got ajoining rooms whenever I asked as well as low floor rooms. Of course, I *do* live in Rachel-land, but still--- It's all about a smile and a sense of puppy-like desperation.

Most of the problem I've had with the Hyatt is a lack of communication on the hotel's part. They'll give me what I ask for initially, but then my luck always turns.
One year we got rooms right next to each other (not adjoining with a door though) and the occupant of the room decided not to check out when he was supposed to. It's nice to have lots of money to drop on a hotel. The man came on Monday to get a 2nd floor room with the intention of staying through DragonCon. He'd told the hotel he was checking out on Thursday morning. Because of the occupancy law, he told the hotel he was extending his stay so they not only had to let him, but they weren't allowed to move him to a spot that wasn't blocked for Dcon. The Hyatt filled us in a few hours later. At that point the hotel was almost filled to capacity since it was late Friday afternoon. They only had rooms with king beds left at that point. They did accomodate us by giving us free rollaway beds for the weeked. When the guy delivered them he wanted his payment because no one had filled him in that we were being accomodated so we had to get the manager involved again.
Another year the Hyatt booked us into a room that the Con was only supposed to use pre-con but had decided to keep for the weekend. The Hyatt figured things out when we told them the Con was going to use it through the weekend. Then another time the Hyatt booked us into a room but got the numbers mixed up and there was actually someone really staying in that room already.
Despite all of this repression of Cobra, rooms have worked out in the end.

Yeah, Mutt, just a play on DragonCon. I totally think your solution is the most parsimonious one so far. Still awaiting a call or an email from Wil to see how he feels about it. I'll keep y'all posted as soon as I hear anything.
Are we still looking at keeping the rooom in the Hyatt or at the Mariott? I'm gonna be getting in fairly early on Thursday... I think I told them 2pm or so. I don't know if check-in time ajusts how good your room is, but it might factor in somehow if I beat the evening rush... right?

I totally think your solution is the most parsimonious one so farIn my life, that's the classiest way I've ever been labeled the cheap bastard that I am! Sounds like you'll be arriving before me (I'd have to leave the house by 8AM, and I don't see that happening), so if it's Hyatt we be, you da man. We can at least attempt the adjoining room thing by coordinating with the keeper of The Pit. In whose name are you reserved, Pitters, and when is that person arriving?

hahaha! I meant "SIMPLE," Mutt! Not "penny-pinching, money-grubbing, cheap"! (I actually had to look that definition up on dictionary.com... I had no idea parsimonius could be used like that!... well, ya learn something new every day.)

I don't see a "simple" definition in Webster's nor dictionary.com. Who was your English teacher?

Hmmm... I think it was science class, actually... Occam's Razor, or the principle of parsimony states: when more than one explanation can be devised for certain observations, always prefer that which gives the most complete explanation while requiring the minimum of assumptions, revisions or refinements of current knowledge. Or to put it simply, "simplest is best!" EDIT: Check out these sites for a more complete explanation or two: www.nwmangum.com/Occam.html www.stardestroyer.net/Empire/Essays/Occam.html

I knew of Occam's Razor but had never heard it called the Principle of Parsimony before. Interesting! So I should ask who was Occam's English teacher!
